Some Fudging Needed
I had to shim behind the driven gears to force them to engage. I think the motor shaft is too long, or longer than when the product was originally designed, so the driving gears are too far from the back. Also, I cut off some extra wood that was pushing against the driving gears.

Fun toy to build
This was a real fun toy to build. It allowed me to spent time with me 10y/o niece. The built took about 2.5 hours with the time to organize all the pieces. The instructions are easy to follow and illustrated, but in one step they weren’t clear but it took a couple of minutes to figure out. I’m glad they included some extra screws because I did drop one or two. Included is a small screwdriver, which is adequate, I opted to use a longer and better quality one.I would recommend the use of an exacto knife or small sharp scissors, the material being wood, it tends to have small splints at the attachment points but are easily removed. My niece being inquisitive, this built, gave us the ability to talk about many topics such as mechanics, circuits, biology of flight and of butterflies, and lasers among others. The second part of this built will be to talk about the different butterflies types and to paint it.

Cool concept-not well executed
My 11 year old daughter and I were very excited to put this together. Unfortunately we had quite a bit of trouble. The instructions were very confusing. My daughter got held up very early on, and once I was helping her, I was also struggling to make sense of what we were supposed to do. The pieces are a little flimsy and we broke one popping it out of the sheet that it came in. Also, some of the pieces were really tough to fit together-like they hadn't been cut quite right. Some other reviewers mentioned that they trimmed the pieces with a knife, but that is definitely not in our skillset.

Not as simple as it looks
I am an experienced model builder, but I've never built one of these wooden kits. As far as these kits go, there is a pretty simple one, but anyone under 12, at least, will need some adult supervision and assistance. I didn't have any trouble breaking the parts, but others have. I did keep a sharp modeler's knife handy if any parts seemed to resist being removed. There are a couple of spare wooden parts in the kit, and I would guess those are parts that have given people trouble. There are 4 sizes of screws in the kit: 10mm, 7mm, 6mm, and 4mm. A phillips screwdriver is included in the kit. There are a few extra screws included; I imagine those get lost easily. The way to tell the 7mm from the 6mm screws is that the 7mm have a different head, flatter and more spread out.The on/off switch was defective. It will turn on, but it won't turn off, so you have to remove the battery to stop the butterfly from "flying."I painted the butterfly with glitter acrylics paints I bought at a dollar store.
